The Importance of Taking Care of Male Skin

As in so many areas of life, when it comes to skin care, men and women have very different needs – and with more and more men seeking aesthetic treatments,

the dermatological and aesthetic requirements of men are increasingly being recognised. Indeed, men have their own set of skin concerns and require uniquely tailored regimes to look and feel their best. Here are some of the most significant differences between male and female skin and how men can keep their skin in top shape for a rested, healthy look.

The Difference Between Male and Female Skin

One of the major differences between male and female skin stems from variations in sex hormones. Males produce up to ten times as much testosterone as females, which generally causes the skin to be oilier. In addition, higher testosterone levels cause male skin to be thicker than female skin, as this hormone creates a dense network of collagen fibres. Testosterone is also the hormone responsible for facial hair growth, which can protect the lower face from photoageing and the collagen degradation that stems from it.

How to Care for Male Skin

These generalisations about male skin do not mean that all men have the same requirements or need the same treatments. A city worker will have different skin care needs than someone who is based outdoors. Still, recognising the effects of testosterone on the male body can help us understand what causes certain skin concerns in men and can inform the approach taken to treat an individual.

Some aspects of a skin care routine are universal. Of course, all men should invest in a cleanser that is right for their skin and apply SPF and topical vitamin C to guard against photoageing. However, for maximum effectiveness, a tailored skincare regime needs to be established to address individual concerns.

Men are now retiring later in life but still wish to maintain a youthful and vigorous appearance in the workplace. An increasing number of men are taking advantage of aesthetic procedures such as Botox and Profhilo, which provide a fresh and natural look. We take a responsible and honest approach, using treatments that restore the skin’s youthful glow, ease fine lines and prevent further signs of ageing.

At WY, we treat all of our clients according to a bespoke plan that is designed to suit their specific needs. We always begin with an initial consultation session, in which we will discuss your lifestyle and your concerns. We also perform a computerised Visia skin analysis, which allows us to see skin damage that may not yet be visible on the surface. We can then decide how to address your concerns with a bespoke treatment plan.

Skin care is an important part of men’s health and is not to be overlooked. Whether you are dealing with oily skin, ageing skin or just seeking skin care advice, consulting with an aesthetic professional can greatly improve your wellbeing and appearance. Book an appointment with the experienced team at WY to learn how we can help make you look as good as you can for your age, giving you a boost to your confidence.
