Hair loss or thinning hair can be very distressing, particularly if you normally have a glossy mane. Whilst hair loss is more common in men, anyone can experience it and around one in three women will do so at some point. Of course, hair shedding is a completely normal daily process but if you experience a noticeable loss of volume or thickness, it is worth seeking advice.
CAUSES OF HAIR THINNING
Genes or a reactive trigger can cause significant hair thinning or a reduction in hair quality; triggers include hormone / thyroid imbalance, infection, nutritional deficiency, stress, rapid weight loss and certain medications. Poor scalp health can also result in issues with the scalp itself or hair problems. Androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness) is a common cause of hair loss, as is alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), an autoimmune condition. Hormonal changes, after pregnancy and childbirth and following menopause, are particularly common triggers. Stress is too: telogen effluvium – where a greater percentage of hair shifts from the growing to shedding phase – causes a sudden excess of hair to fall out. Usually a temporary condition, it tends to occur after severe stress – brought on by an infection (such as COVID-19).
